Welcome to Photos of Barbados
Barbados is a beautiful island in the eastern Caribbean, it is world renownd for the soft white powder beaches of the platinum west coast. It lies to the east of the windward islands in the southern Caribbean, it is around 100 miles from its nearest neighbough and about ¼ of the size of greater London. Barbados has around 60 miles of coastline and some of the best stretches of sandy beaches in the Caribbean. Barbados gained independence from the UK in 1966 but can still be referred to as Little England by some. Barbados was originally named by the Portuguese “Los Barbados” meaning “The bearded one”, it was thought the name came from the Fig trees that have such large hanging roots that they looked liked beards. The Portuguese also brought sugar cane to Barbados and this fueled the main economy until the tourist industry recently became the main income for the island. |
